Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
