A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
