In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
